A passenger who was accused of verbally assaulting flight attendants with racial slurs and death threats after getting drunk and high on a Spirit Airlines flight will now serve time in federal prison.

Michael Anthony Minko, 36, was found guilty of two counts of interference with flight crew members and attendants, and sentenced to two months in federal prison on Monday, for his actions on July 18, court records for the US District Court for the Southern District of Florida show.

Minko 'said he was going to kill [a flight attendant identified as] RN and everyone else by blowing up the plane,' a stipulated fact statement read, according to the Miami Herald.

Minko was traveling from from Newark, New Jersey, to Fort Lauderdale on a Spirit Airlines flight onJuly 18 when he became intoxicated.

A passenger seated next to the White Springs, Florida resident observed him taking prescription alprazolam, which is a generic form of Xanax, a well-known anti-anxiety medication.

At the same time, he drank 'an excessive amount of whiskey' from his own bottle, according to a statement from the US Attorney's Office, released on Tuesday.

This all occurred during the first hour of the flight, which took off at 8.25 pm Eastern.

The passenger seated in the same row as Minko told RN about this, at which point RN told Minko he could not drink from his own whiskey bottle.

Minko then denied having the bottle, began to yell that he was sick and needed to get off the plane. 

Then flight attendant BB told Minko to hand over the bottle. That's when he called her the racial slurs.

During the course of this outburst, Minko also told RN and BB he would kill them, along with everyone else on the plane.  

BB backed off in fear, but gave Minko a bag in case he actually did get sick. 

Minko also reportedly punched the seat if the woman who was seated in the row ahead of him, pushed a passenger in the first row and punched the airplane window next to his seat. 

Eventually, with just 45 minutes left in their tirp, one of the flight attendants enlisted the help of three passengers to secure Minko's hands behind his back with plastic flex cuffs. 




Minko has been ordered to report to serve his sentence on Friday, February 23, which will allow him time to complete a program at an alcohol and drug treatment facility

Minko then called BB more racial slurs, which she videotaped, while he complained about the restraints on his hands. 

Minko was found guilty of 'intimidating' the flight attends, and 'interfering with the performance of their duties,' as tending to his violent outburst prevented them from taking care of other passengers, the US Attorney's Office said.


Minko's was charged with federal crimes, so he was tried, convicted and sentenced in US District Court for the Southern District of Florida by the Honorable Beth Bloom.

He was sentenced to two terms, each two months long, but those two months are to be served at the same time, the prosecution said. 

Minko has been ordered to report to serve his sentence on Friday, February 23, which will allow him time to complete a program at an alcohol and drug treatment facility.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant US Attorney William T. Shockle.
